LP-Corrology (LP-ICDA)

This chapter presents the LP-ICDA assessment workflow for liquid pipelines. The LP-Corrology tool evaluates pipeline profile, liquid flow behavior, water and solid accumulation, and segment corrosion rate using the LP source calculation model.

LP-ICDA Overview

LP-ICDA is an indirect inspection assessment for liquid pipelines. It combines operating conditions, liquid properties, pipeline stationing, and elevation profile to identify segments where water or solids can accumulate and where internal corrosion may be possible.

The LP-Corrology calculation follows the LP source model in static/LP_ICDA/lp_icda.js. It determines local pressure and temperature, segment inclination, critical water angle and velocity, flow pattern, water accumulation, solid accumulation, and corrosion rate.

The assessment process consists of four key steps:

  1. Pre-Assessment
    • Collect essential history and operational data.
    • Confirm the liquid-pipeline operating envelope.
    • Identify LP-ICDA regions.
  2. Indirect Inspection
    • Calculate the LP flow and accumulation behavior.
    • Develop the pipeline inclination profile.
    • Identify locations where water or solid accumulation may be present.
  3. Detailed Examinations
    • Conduct field inspections at selected locations.
    • Perform detailed examinations.
    • Assess overall condition of the DG-ICDA region.
  4. Post-Assessment
    • Evaluate effectiveness of the DG-ICDA process.
    • Establish reassessment intervals.

LP-Corrology® Model

A model (LP-Corrology®) has been developed to support LP-ICDA Step 2 – Indirect Inspection assessments. The model reports critical water angle, water and oil layer velocity, flow pattern, accumulation flags, minimal solid settling-bed velocity, and corrosion rate for each profile segment.

Tools

Below is the LP-ICDA tool for liquid-pipeline assessment. It uses the LP workbook and reports one result row for each segment in the supplied profile.

How to Use the LP-ICDA Assessment Tool

Follow the steps below to perform the DG-ICDA indirect inspection assessment:

  1. Click Download Excel Template and complete the workbook.
  2. Use the required sheets for calculation:
    • Region_Data: region operating conditions, liquid properties, flow rates, and chemistry.
    • Segment_Profile_Data: region, segment, stationing, and elevation profile.
    • Project_Information: project metadata retained in the workbook.
  3. Click Upload Data and select the completed Excel file.
  4. Click Run Assessment to execute the LP-ICDA / LP-Corrology® calculations.
  5. Review the full segment report, including inclination, critical angle, layer velocities, flow pattern, accumulation flags, settling velocity, and corrosion rate.
  6. Click PDF or Excel to export the LP-specific report.
